During the first session, Dr. Calix-Hughes will gather relevant information and history of the issues bringing you in. You will be asked to complete a few forms, including a consent to treatment form. She will complete an evaluation that lasts approximately 75 minutes. At the end of that session, you and Dr. Calix-Hughes will discuss the direction the therapy will take including the frequency and length of sessions needed. If she feels that you could be better served by another therapist, she will make that referral at that time.
You along with the assistance of Dr. Calix-Hughes will identify goals you would like to achieve and develop a plan for working to meet those goals. These sessions last approximately 45 minutes to 60 minutes depending on your needs, and will take place weekly to every other week as needed.
*Helpful Tip:
Psychotherapy is not easily described in general statements. It varies depending on the personalities of the therapist and the client, and the particular concerns you are experiencing. There are many different methods Dr. Calix-Hughes may use to deal with the concerns that you hope to address. Psychotherapy calls for an active effort on your part. In order for the therapy to be most successful, you will have to work on things you and Dr. Calix-Hughes discuss both during your sessions and at home.
Psychotherapy can have benefits and risks. Since therapy may involve discussing unpleasant aspects of your life, you may experience uncomfortable feelings like sadness, guilt, anger, frustration, loneliness, and helplessness. On the other hand, psychotherapy has also been shown to have many benefits. Therapy often leads to better relationships, solutions to specific problems, and significant reductions in feelings of distress. But there are no guarantees of what you will experience.
